Bone Resurrects Ruthless
As Death Row Records became the prominent West Coast rap label, Eazy-E and his Ruthless Records faded from the spotlight. Eazy-E rebounded by branching out of Southern California and signing Cleveland, Ohio, rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, who popularized the tonguetwisting rap style introduced in the early 1990s by Twista, then known as Tung Twista. Below is an excerpt from www.allmusic.comâs biography of the group:
Graced with a quick, sometimes sung delivery, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony burst out of the Midwest in the mid-â90s with a pair of massive hits (âThuggish Ruggish Boneâ and âTha Crossroadsâ) along with a great album (E 1999 Eternal) and then quickly unraveled. Eazy-E signed the groupâinitially comprised of Krayzie Bone, Wish Bone, Flesh-N-Bone, Layzie Bone, and Bizzy Boneâto Ruthless Records and released a debut EP [extended play], Creepin on ah Come Up (1994). The EP boasted âThuggish Ruggish Bone,â a conventional G-funk song with an unconventional array of Bone Thug rappers that became an overnight summer anthem, especially throughout the Midwest. Amid the fervor, the Cleveland rap group entered the studio immediately and emerged with a remarkable album, E 1999 Eternal (1995). The album topped the charts and spawned a pair of popular singles, â1st of the Monthâ and âTha Crossroads,â the latter a Grammy Award recipient. . . . As was in vogue at the time, the group members pursued respective solo careers and also a Mo Thugs Family spinoff group.
